Season 3 of Hijack: what we actually know after season 2 dropped on Apple TV+

With season 2 of Hijack now streaming on Apple TV+, a familiar question is already coming up for fans in the United States: will there be a season 3? Led by Idris Elba, this thriller has quickly become one of the most-watched suspense series on the platform since its 2023 launch. As of now, though, there is still no official word on whether the story will continue.

Where things stand: no official renewal for season 3 yet

At the time of publication, Apple TV+ has not confirmed either a renewal or a cancellation for a third season of Hijack. That silence should not be interpreted as a bad sign in itself. Season 2 has only just arrived, and the service typically waits several weeks before making a call, taking into account viewing figures, subscriber engagement and critical response.

The same kind of timing played out between the first and second seasons. Season 1, released in the summer of 2023, did not get its renewal order until January 2024, several months after it wrapped. In other words, given where season 2 currently is in its life cycle, it’s still very early for any definitive decision.

What the creator says about the future

Before season 2 went live, executive producer and creator Jim Field Smith explained that he does not like to plan beyond the current season while he’s still working on it. His priority is to tell the story in front of him rather than to build out a long-term roadmap in advance.

At the same time, he made it clear that he enjoys collaborating with Idris Elba and with Apple TV+. That suggests the world of Hijack could, in theory, support more stories in the future. Still, this is only a creative openness, not a production announcement or a hidden confirmation of season 3.

How Hijack is designed: self-contained crisis arcs

One key element of Hijack is its format. Each season drops Sam Nelson into a high-stakes crisis in a confined environment, under intense time pressure. Season 1 unfolded on a plane; season 2 shifts the tension to the Berlin subway system.

This setup works almost like an anthology built around a single lead character. It makes it easy to imagine other potential scenarios for future seasons without needing a strict narrative continuation from one to the next. However, the more mixed critical reaction to season 2 compared with season 1 is likely to be part of Apple TV+’s internal discussion about what comes next.

Key dates and current status at a glance

  • Season 1 released in 2023 and renewed in early 2024
  • Season 2 released in January 2026
  • No official information about a season 3 so far

Until Apple TV+ shares a clear decision, the focus for viewers is simply to dive into season 2, which is now available, and wait for any updates on where Sam Nelson’s story might go from here.

FAQ

Has Apple TV+ officially renewed Hijack for season 3?

No. Up to now, Apple TV+ has not announced a renewal or a cancellation for season 3 of Hijack.

Why hasn’t a decision been made about season 3 yet?

Season 2 has only just been released. Apple TV+ usually waits to evaluate audience numbers, viewer engagement and critical response before confirming the future of a show.

Is the creative team interested in continuing the series?

Jim Field Smith has said he is open to continuing his collaboration with Idris Elba and Apple TV+, but he has not confirmed that a third season is in development.

How is each season of Hijack structured?

Each season centers on Sam Nelson facing a major crisis in a confined setting and over a tightly compressed period of time. Season 1 takes place on a plane, while season 2 moves the action to the Berlin subway, with each season working as its own self-contained story.
