On April 6, Disney+ drops a new animated series that puts one of the most enigmatic villains in the Star Wars saga back under the spotlight: Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Set after the events of The Clone Wars, this show created by Dave Filoni follows Maul, the former Sith Lord, as he maneuvers through a galaxy now ruled by the Empire and tries to reclaim a place that no longer exists for him.

Across ten episodes, Disney+ uses animation to deepen the Star Wars mythology and to focus on a character who has long fascinated fans without ever being fully explored on screen.

Where Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord fits in the Star Wars timeline

The story of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord unfolds roughly a year after the end of the Clone War. The Republic has fallen, the Empire is in control, and Maul is no longer a central player in the galactic conflict. Far from the grand Sith conspiracy, he is portrayed as a survivor trying to reconnect with the power he once had.

With the Sith Order out of his reach and an Empire that refuses to give him any official role, Maul turns to the criminal underworld. Organized crime becomes his way back into the game, a tool to spread his influence in a galaxy that barely remembers him. The series builds directly on the narrative threads laid down in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, while focusing on a time period that has rarely been shown on screen: the era when Maul operates in the shadows, away from both Jedi and Sith.

A character study focused on a ruthless antagonist

Rather than following the usual hero’s journey, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord deliberately adopts Maul’s perspective. The show dives into his mindset, his contradictions, and how he interprets a galaxy that has evolved without him. Sam Witwer once again lends his voice to the character, continuing the interpretation he has crafted across multiple animated Star Wars projects.

The narrative concentrates on several key aspects of his evolution:

  • the rebuilding of Maul’s criminal syndicate,
  • his dynamic with a new apprentice, Devon Izara,
  • his complex connection to the Empire and Palpatine, whom he has never exposed.

The creative team makes a clear choice: Maul is not reinvented as a misunderstood hero. He remains an antagonist, and the series aims to shed light on the internal logic of a figure shaped by violence and loss rather than to absolve him.

Visual style, voice cast and tone on Disney+

The series brings together a substantial voice cast, including Sam Witwer, Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura and Richard Ayoade. Among the new faces introduced is an investigator tasked with upholding order in a space overrun by criminal networks, adding another perspective on Maul’s activities in the underworld.

On the visual side, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord builds on the aesthetic foundation of The Clone Wars but pushes the look in a darker direction. The animation leans into stronger contrasts, bolder shadow work and a more subdued color palette. Lucasfilm Animation positions this artistic shift as a reflection of Maul’s mental state and the brutality of the world he navigates.

Release schedule and episode structure on Disney+

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is structured as a ten-episode season. The launch is set for April 6 on Disney+, with two new episodes arriving each week until May 4, a date with special meaning for the franchise.

This release pattern fits into Disney+’s broader strategy of using animation to complement its live-action Star Wars line-up. By dedicating a full series to Maul, the platform continues to expand the saga through character-driven stories that add depth to figures who have long existed at the edges of the main films.

Through this show, Star Wars opens a window onto a new dimension of Maul: that of a shadow lord attempting to survive and manipulate a galaxy that has moved on without him. For viewers in the United States discovering the series on Disney+, it is an opportunity to see how a fallen Sith tries to reshape his destiny far from the usual Jedi-versus-Sith conflict.
