Apple TV+ is betting on a bold mix of chills and laughs with Widow’s Bay, a new American series launching on April 29, 2026. Blending horror elements with character-driven comedy, the show uses an isolated coastal island setting to explore how modern logic collides with local folklore and shared fears, all while keeping a deliberately offbeat tone.

An isolated island where superstition never really left

The story takes place in Widow’s Bay, a small island located roughly twenty-five miles off the coast. Life there is shaped by isolation: no Wi‑Fi, unreliable cell service, and a community deeply attached to its traditions. Many residents are convinced the island is cursed, a belief that the mayor, Tom Loftis, absolutely refuses to take seriously.

Tom, played by Matthew Rhys, is a pragmatic local official. His constituents see him as weak, but he is determined to jump-start the island’s struggling economy. His plan is straightforward: turn Widow’s Bay into a tourist destination to secure a better future for his teenage son. Against all expectations, the strategy works and the first visitors begin to arrive. That’s exactly when the long‑dormant legends that haunt the island start to surface again.

Where horror and human comedy collide

Widow’s Bay positions itself right at the crossroads between genuine horror and human‑scale comedy. The show leans on bizarre situations and characters confronted with events that defy explanation. Supernatural phenomena, dismissed for years as nothing more than local tall tales, suddenly come back after decades of apparent calm. Those events shake Tom’s certainties and stress‑test the fragile unity of the island community.

The narrative constantly plays with the contrast between a rational, modern worldview and the power of collective belief. The series does not rush to tell viewers whether they are dealing with pure superstition or something very real. That ambiguity feeds both the suspense and the humor, while putting relationships, family ties and social tensions in a declining community front and center.

Behind the scenes: creators, cast and episode count

The show is created and overseen by Katie Dippold, who also serves as executive producer. The first season consists of ten episodes. Hiro Murai directs several of them and joins the executive producing team alongside Matthew Rhys, Claudia Shin and Carver Karaszewski. Production is handled by Apple Studios, Chum Films and Spooky Tree.

The main cast includes:

  • Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis;
  • Kate O’Flynn;
  • Stephen Root;
  • Kingston Rumi Southwick;
  • Kevin Carroll;
  • Dale Dickey.

Filming took place in 2025 in several locations in New England, including multiple cities in Massachusetts, reinforcing the grounded feel of the island backdrop.

Release schedule on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ will drop the first three episodes of Widow’s Bay on April 29, 2026. After that initial batch, new episodes will stream weekly until the end of the ten‑episode season.
