What East of Eden is about
This is Netflix’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, the sprawling family saga the author considered his masterwork. The story unfolds in California’s Salinas Valley and follows two families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — across a generation, restaging the biblical arcs of Adam and Eve and of Cain and Abel as a very human account of jealousy, inheritance, and the question of whether people can choose to be good.
At the center is Cathy Ames, one of the most unsettling figures in American literature, who marries into the Trask family and detonates it from the inside. If you only know the title from the 1955 film, note that the movie covered just the last third of the book. This version has room for the whole thing.
The cast
Florence Pugh — of Midsommar, Dune: Part Two, and the Thunderbolts corner of the Marvel universe — stars as Cathy and also serves as an executive producer. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist, fresh off Challengers and West Side Story, plays his brother Charles. The deep bench around them includes Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders.
Behind the camera, Zoe Kazan adapted the novel and runs the show as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Jeb Stuart. Garth Davis directs the first four episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre the final three. There is a nice piece of film history here, too: Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 adaptation that made James Dean a star.
Should you watch all seven at once?
You can — and the binge-friendly, all-at-once drop clearly invites it — but this is a slow-burn literary drama, not a cliffhanger machine. The seven episodes carry their own titles: “Genesis,” “Cathy,” “In the Valley,” “Kate,” “Departure,” “The Great Try,” and “East of Eden.” They are built to escalate rather than to end each hour on a twist, so spacing them out over a few nights works just as well as a single marathon.

Frequently asked
Is East of Eden on Netflix in the US? Yes. The limited series is a Netflix original and streams in the United States, included with any plan.
How many episodes are there? Seven, all available now. It is a self-contained limited series, so there is no season-two wait built into the ending.
What time did East of Eden come out? It went live at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET on October 1, 2026, the same window Netflix uses for most new releases.
Do I need the Premium plan to watch it? No. Any Netflix tier includes the series. You only need Premium ($26.99 a month) if you specifically want 4K Ultra HD and HDR; Standard with ads ($8.99) and Standard ($19.99) both carry the show in 1080p.
