East of Eden is streaming now on Netflix. All seven episodes of the limited series went live at once on Thursday, October 1, 2026, and they are included with every U.S. Netflix plan at no extra charge.

The series dropped at the usual Netflix release window — 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET — so if you are reading this, the full run is already waiting in your watchlist. Below is everything a U.S. viewer needs: where it streams, what it costs, who is in it, and whether it is worth clearing an evening for.

The short version

  • Where: Netflix (U.S. and worldwide)
  • Release date: Thursday, October 1, 2026
  • Start time: 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET
  • Format: Limited series, seven episodes, all released at once
  • Price: Included with any Netflix subscription. U.S. plans start at $8.99 a month for Standard with ads; the ad-free Standard plan is $19.99, and Premium, the only 4K tier, is $26.99.

There is no separate rental, no premium unlock, and no weekly wait. A Netflix login is the only thing standing between you and the finale.

What East of Eden is about

This is Netflix’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, the sprawling family saga the author considered his masterwork. The story unfolds in California’s Salinas Valley and follows two families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — across a generation, restaging the biblical arcs of Adam and Eve and of Cain and Abel as a very human account of jealousy, inheritance, and the question of whether people can choose to be good.

At the center is Cathy Ames, one of the most unsettling figures in American literature, who marries into the Trask family and detonates it from the inside. If you only know the title from the 1955 film, note that the movie covered just the last third of the book. This version has room for the whole thing.

The cast

Florence Pugh — of Midsommar, Dune: Part Two, and the Thunderbolts corner of the Marvel universe — stars as Cathy and also serves as an executive producer. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist, fresh off Challengers and West Side Story, plays his brother Charles. The deep bench around them includes Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders.

Behind the camera, Zoe Kazan adapted the novel and runs the show as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Jeb Stuart. Garth Davis directs the first four episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre the final three. There is a nice piece of film history here, too: Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 adaptation that made James Dean a star.

Should you watch all seven at once?

You can — and the binge-friendly, all-at-once drop clearly invites it — but this is a slow-burn literary drama, not a cliffhanger machine. The seven episodes carry their own titles: “Genesis,” “Cathy,” “In the Valley,” “Kate,” “Departure,” “The Great Try,” and “East of Eden.” They are built to escalate rather than to end each hour on a twist, so spacing them out over a few nights works just as well as a single marathon.

Here is the official trailer to set the tone before you start:

Frequently asked

Is East of Eden on Netflix in the US? Yes. The limited series is a Netflix original and streams in the United States, included with any plan.

How many episodes are there? Seven, all available now. It is a self-contained limited series, so there is no season-two wait built into the ending.

What time did East of Eden come out? It went live at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET on October 1, 2026, the same window Netflix uses for most new releases.

Do I need the Premium plan to watch it? No. Any Netflix tier includes the series. You only need Premium ($26.99 a month) if you specifically want 4K Ultra HD and HDR; Standard with ads ($8.99) and Standard ($19.99) both carry the show in 1080p.

Is it the same story as the James Dean movie? It is the same novel, but far more complete. The 1955 film adapted only the book’s final act; this seven-part version takes on the full multigenerational saga.
