Why the new animated series about Darth Maul is a must-watch event on Disney+

On April 6, Disney+ brings a new dark corner of the Star Wars galaxy into the spotlight with Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an animated series focused on one of the franchise’s most unforgettable villains. Led by Dave Filoni, this new show follows Maul’s path after the events of The Clone Wars, as he tries to claw back power in a galaxy now firmly under Imperial control.

Where Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord fits in the Star Wars timeline

The story of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord takes place roughly a year after the end of the Clone War. The Republic has fallen, the Empire reigns, and Maul is no longer a recognized Sith Lord. Instead, he’s a survivor operating on the fringes, determined to rebuild what he lost.

With the Sith order no longer offering him a place and an Empire that doesn’t acknowledge him, Maul turns to the criminal underworld as his primary tool. By leaning on organized crime, he seeks to regain leverage and carve out a new role for himself far from the official power structures of the Empire.

The series directly continues the character arc audiences saw in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, but shifts the focus to a moment that has never been fully explored on screen: the era when Maul moves in the shadows, away from both Jedi and Sith, building his own networks and schemes.

A darker, character-driven look at Maul

Rather than following the usual perspective of Jedi or soldiers, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord adopts Maul’s point of view. The series digs into how he thinks, what drives him, and how he perceives a galaxy that has evolved without him at its center.

Sam Witwer once again lends his voice to Maul, continuing the work he has done across previous animated Star Wars projects. The writing focuses on several key aspects of the character’s new chapter:

  • how he rebuilds his criminal syndicate,
  • how he forges a relationship with his new apprentice, Devon Izara,
  • and how he manages his complex, unresolved bond with the Empire and with Palpatine, whom he has never openly betrayed.

The creative team is clear about one thing: Maul is not being reframed as a hero. He remains an antagonist, shaped by violence, loss, and a lifelong immersion in the dark side. The goal is not to redeem him, but to reveal the internal logic of a character who embraces darkness while trying to survive in a new order he doesn’t control.

Voice cast and visual style

The vocal cast is led by Sam Witwer and also includes Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, and Richard Ayoade. Alongside Maul and Devon Izara, the show introduces several new characters, including an investigator tasked with maintaining order in a landscape dominated by criminal networks.

On the visual side, the show builds on the stylistic foundations of The Clone Wars while pushing the aesthetic into a more ominous space. The animation leans into stronger contrasts, pronounced shadows, and an overall darker color palette. Lucasfilm Animation describes a sharper, more hard-edged visual approach designed to mirror Maul’s mindset and the harsh, violent world he inhabits.

Episode count, release schedule and Disney+ strategy

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord consists of ten episodes. The series premieres on April 6 on Disney+, with two episodes released each week until May 4, a date that holds special meaning for Star Wars fans.

This new show fits into Disney+’s broader strategy of using animation to expand and complement its live-action slate. By choosing a central figure like Maul, the platform deepens the Star Wars mythos while offering a fresh angle on a character whose story has often played out in the background of larger galactic conflicts.

Through this series, the Star Wars universe opens a window onto what it means to be a “shadow lord” in a galaxy that has moved on. Viewers are invited to follow Maul as he navigates a world that no longer belongs to him, yet still bears the marks of the chaos he helped unleash.
