Apple TV+ is doubling down on psychological thrillers in 2025 with Imperfect Women, a new series based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name. Built around a long-standing friendship shattered by a violent crime, the show dives into guilt, secrets, and fractured loyalty. The series premieres on March 18 on Apple TV+ in the United States.

What is Imperfect Women about?

At the center of Imperfect Women are three women bound by decades of friendship. Their carefully balanced dynamic collapses when a crime forces them to confront everything they thought they knew about one another.

Instead of focusing purely on solving the case, the show uses the investigation as a lens to expose buried compromises, unspoken tensions, and past decisions that never stopped echoing through their lives. As the story moves forward and more facts emerge, what seemed solid begins to crumble, and every relationship in the group is put under pressure.

The narrative leans heavily into introspection and emotional fallout. Viewers are invited to follow how each character processes the aftermath of the crime, how their perception of the truth shifts, and how loyalty is tested when the stakes become deeply personal. The suspense comes as much from what the characters are hiding from themselves as from what they are hiding from others.

The core trio and the web of relationships

The show is anchored by three lead performances that drive the emotional core of the story:

  • Elisabeth Moss plays Mary, a woman forced to face choices she made long ago and the impact they still have today;
  • Kerry Washington portrays Eleanor, whose role inside the group grows more complex and uncertain as the truth comes into focus;
  • Kate Mara is Nancy, a pivotal presence whose place in the friendship becomes increasingly fragile.

Alongside them, Joel Kinnaman and Corey Stoll take on key roles that help shape the course of the investigation and widen the drama beyond the central trio. A number of recurring characters add further layers to the story, complicating the network of loyalties and heightening the sense that no one is telling the full story.

From page to screen: a faithful psychological adaptation

Imperfect Women is created for television by Annie Weisman, who adapts Araminta Hall’s novel with a strong focus on psychological nuance and shifting perspectives. The series keeps the book’s emphasis on how different points of view can completely transform the way a single event is understood.

The show is produced by Apple Studios and 20th Television, with the lead actresses also serving as executive producers. Their involvement behind the camera reinforces the character-driven approach at the heart of the project.

The pilot episode is directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, setting the tone and visual identity of the series. She is later joined by Nzingha Stewart and Daina Reid, whose work maintains continuity while bringing distinct directing sensibilities to the evolving story.

Release plan and episode rollout on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ will debut Imperfect Women on March 18, with the first two episodes available immediately. After that, the platform will follow its now familiar weekly release format for drama series, dropping one new episode each week.

This staggered rollout supports the show’s slow-burn structure, giving viewers time to dissect each reveal, question every character’s version of events, and speculate about what really happened as new pieces of the puzzle are uncovered.

By blending intimate character drama with thriller tension, Imperfect Women positions itself as a series that doesn’t just ask who committed the crime, but what “truth” actually means when shared histories and emotional blind spots are involved.

Key details for U.S. viewers

  • Streaming platform: Apple TV+
  • Premiere date: March 18
