Netflix is once again diving into one of its most recognizable worlds with Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, an animated spin-off that slots directly into the official timeline of the original show. Launching on April 23, 2026, this new series aims to speak both to longtime fans and viewers discovering Hawkins for the first time, by revisiting a pivotal moment in the town’s history through animation.

Where Tales from ’85 fits in the Stranger Things timeline

Instead of jumping ahead or rewriting the rules, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 focuses on a very specific period: the winter of 1985. The story unfolds between seasons 2 and 3 of the live-action series, at a time when the kids are trying to rebuild something resembling a normal life after the gate to the Upside Down has been shut.

Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Max are back together, but the calm doesn’t last. Strange signs keep surfacing in Hawkins, suggesting that the connection to the Upside Down never truly disappeared. New creatures appear, unexplained events resurface, and the influence of that other dimension seems more deeply rooted than anyone suspected.

The show leans on a familiar narrative engine: a collective investigation led by the kids. While it clearly respects the DNA of the original series, the story is built to function on its own so viewers can follow it without having to rewatch every previous episode.

A Saturday-morning cartoon vibe with an ’80s twist

Developed by Eric Robles, the animated spin-off openly embraces the spirit of classic ’80s Saturday-morning cartoons. The creative team cites direct inspirations such as The Real Ghostbusters, Scooby-Doo and He-Man, both in the way the episodes are paced and in the visual treatment.

The animation is handled by Flying Bark Productions. Visually, the show relies on a distinctive CG animation style, with bolder, more saturated colors and stylized faces that move away from strict realism. This aesthetic choice gives the team room to imagine stranger, more daring monsters while still keeping the series approachable for a broader audience.

Even with a more family-oriented positioning, the show doesn’t shy away from darker notes. The creature designs benefit from the input of Carlos Huante, known for his work on science fiction projects with a more ominous tone, which helps preserve the unsettling side of the Stranger Things universe.

Familiar heroes, a new ally and fresh dynamics

All of the core heroes from Stranger Things are back in animated form. On the voice side, the series features:

  • Brett Gipson as Jim Hopper
  • Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven
  • Luca Diaz as Mike Wheeler
  • Elisha Williams as Lucas Sinclair
  • Braxton Quinney as Dustin Henderson
  • Benjamin Plessala as Will Byers
  • Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max Mayfield

Alongside this familiar group, a brand-new character makes her debut: Nikki Baxter, an inventive tinkerer who occasionally teams up with the gang. Her presence adds a fresh angle to conversations and group dynamics, while carefully preserving the balance that fans associate with the original ensemble.

Why Netflix is betting on an animated Stranger Things spin-off

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 was announced after the confirmation that the flagship live-action series is heading toward its conclusion. Within that context, the animated show clearly acts as a strategic extension of the franchise: it keeps the Hawkins mythology alive without altering or undoing the ending of the main story.

This spin-off occupies a narrative “in-between” space. It can flesh out the lore surrounding Hawkins and the Upside Down, while serving as a more accessible entry point for viewers who might be diving into the universe for the first time via animation. For fans in the United States used to binging genre shows on streaming platforms, it offers both nostalgic ’80s references and a new format that fits easily into a modern watchlist.

How audiences will respond to this return to 1985 remains to be seen, especially as the Stranger Things universe prepares to close its live-action chapter. What’s certain is that the franchise is not disappearing from Netflix anytime soon.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will stream exclusively on Netflix starting April 23, 2026.
