What season 3 is about
Peter Sutherland, played again by Gabriel Basso, is sent to track a young Treasury agent who has killed his superior and fled to Istanbul carrying highly sensitive government intelligence.
What starts as a contained manhunt opens out fast. The trail leads into an opaque financial network, professional killers, and a conspiracy that reaches back to Washington — the show’s reliable move, and one it executes with more confidence here than in season 2.
Do you need to have watched seasons 1 and 2?
Season 2 helps; season 1 is optional. Season 3 picks up directly from where season 2 left Peter, both in terms of where he sits professionally and what he is willing to do. The Istanbul assignment is new, but his state of mind arriving into it is not.
Season 1 set up the premise and the character. If you are coming in cold and want one season of context, make it the second.
Behind the series
The Night Agent was created by Shawn Ryan, adapted from Matthew Quirk‘s novel. Ryan’s background in procedural drama shows in the construction: the conspiracy escalates on a schedule, and the show is unusually disciplined about paying off what it plants.
That structural reliability is why it binges so well, and why Netflix keeps releasing it in one block rather than stretching it weekly.
Is there a season 4?
