Spoiler warning: this article reveals the full ending of Animals.

The short version: the child who gets kidnapped in Animals was never Ben Affleck’s son, the real hero of the rescue is the housekeeper’s partner, and Mark Kimball walks away from the carnage having turned a tragedy into a winning campaign for mayor of Los Angeles. Affleck’s political thriller, which started streaming worldwide on Netflix on October 9, 2026, saves its nastiest twist for who Mark becomes once the ransom is paid.

Below is exactly what happens in the final act, who lives, who dies, and what the last scene is really saying. Animals is a Netflix original, so it’s available in the US on Netflix with no separate rental.

Who was really kidnapped in Animals?

The first reversal is the identity of the victim. Mark Kimball (Ben Affleck) and his wife Abigail (Kerry Washington) believe their son Denny has been taken. He hasn’t. The kidnappers actually grabbed Hector, the son of Ramon — the partner of Cecilia, the Kimballs’ live-in housekeeper. The two boys were wearing identical Halloween costumes, and the kidnappers took the wrong one.

That mistake is the engine of the whole film. The criminals demand seven million dollars, and Mark has to decide whether to sacrifice his fortune for a child who isn’t his. His mayoral campaign makes it worse: refusing to pay could destroy his standing with Los Angeles voters, especially the city’s Latino community, whose support he has been courting.

What happens during the ransom exchange?

To pull the money together, Mark turns to Dayle Burton (Gillian Anderson), a fixer who offers a brutal shortcut: have the kidnappers killed during the handoff. Mark agrees. The exchange takes place near the Los Angeles River, where Hector is returned to him.

It goes wrong fast. A gunman hired by Dayle shoots two of the kidnappers, but a third opens fire, killing both Dayle and her man. Just as Mark and Hector look trapped, Ramon appears and kills the last kidnapper himself. The boy’s father — not the wealthy candidate, not the hired muscle — is the one who actually saves them.

Does Dayle Burton die in Animals?

Yes. Dayle does not survive the shootout, and her death is more convenient for Mark than it first appears. Earlier, she had recorded Mark agreeing to the plan to kill the kidnappers — hard proof of his involvement. With Dayle dead, Mark takes her phone and deletes the recording, erasing the one piece of evidence that ties him to the violence. In that moment he realizes he can rewrite the story of the night however he likes.

Does Mark Kimball become mayor?

He does. Once the dust settles, Mark presents a carefully edited version of events to the public: a man who risked his life and his money to rescue the child of an immigrant family. Ramon backs up that account, and in return his family leaves the US for Mexico with the seven million dollars. The narrative sends Mark’s popularity soaring and carries him to victory in the mayoral race — and the film hints his ambitions may not stop at City Hall.

What the ending of Animals really means

The finale is about what Mark is willing to become. He isn’t simply a desperate father; he’s a man who can convert a bloodbath into a personal win. The film sets his political sleight of hand against Ramon’s plain courage: one father actually saved his son, the other took public credit for it. Mark keeps his power precisely by hiding the consequences of his own choices — the title’s “animals” cutting both ways. It’s a bleak note, and a deliberate one.

Is Animals based on a true story?

No. There’s no single real case behind it; the screenplay is original, credited to Connor O. McIntyre, Billy Ray and Ben Affleck, who also directs and stars. The premise does echo Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low — a wealthy man told his son has been kidnapped, only to learn the kidnappers seized his chauffeur’s boy by mistake — and several US critics have framed Animals as a modern reworking of that setup. What’s invented is grounded in real themes: the role of money in politics, and the gap between the image a public figure sells and who he really is.

Frequently asked

Does Mark’s son die in Animals?
No. Denny was never kidnapped. The kidnappers took Hector by mistake because the boys wore matching Halloween costumes.

Who saves Hector at the end of Animals?
Ramon, the boy’s father, steps in during the ransom exchange and kills the last kidnapper.

Does Mark Kimball win the election?
Yes. Mark becomes mayor of Los Angeles after using the rescue to boost his public image.

What happens to the ransom money?
The film implies Ramon and his family leave for Mexico with the seven million dollars.

Where can I watch Animals in the US?
Animals is streaming exclusively on Netflix in the US.
