Habeas Corpus is streaming now on Netflix in the United States, where all eight episodes landed worldwide on Tuesday, September 23, 2026. There is nothing extra to buy: the Brazilian legal drama is included with any Netflix plan, and because it dropped as a full season you can watch the entire story the moment you press play.

When and where to watch Habeas Corpus in the US

Habeas Corpus is a Netflix original, so it is available exclusively on Netflix — no separate rental, purchase, or add-on channel is involved. Netflix released it globally on September 23, 2026, following its standard rollout at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET, which is why the series was already waiting in most US members’ feeds first thing that morning.

All eight episodes arrived at once rather than weekly, so American viewers get the same binge-friendly release as audiences in Brazil. If it is not surfacing on your home screen, search the title directly or open the series page at netflix.com/title/81738522.

What Habeas Corpus is about

Billed as Netflix’s first Brazilian legal drama, Habeas Corpus follows Inez, a respected law professor who runs a conviction-review group dedicated to freeing people imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. Her latest case centers on a young man who insists he was wrongly found guilty, and the series builds its tension from the slow, procedural work of pulling a closed case back open.

The hook is personal as much as legal. Inez does not realize that her sharpest student, Marina, sought her out with a hidden agenda: to right an injustice that scarred Marina’s own family years earlier. As the review group digs deeper, each discovery reshapes what everyone thought they knew, and the line between the pursuit of justice and the pursuit of payback keeps moving.

The true story behind the series

Habeas Corpus is inspired by the real work of the Innocence Project Brazil, an organization that investigates wrongful convictions and fights to release people who have sometimes spent years behind bars for crimes they did not commit. The show does not dramatize one specific case; instead it draws on the broader reality of a justice system shaped by inequality and uneven access to a good defense.

That grounding is what separates Habeas Corpus from a standard courtroom procedural. It is less about a single verdict than about how hard it is to reverse one once the system has moved on — the kind of premise that has powered acclaimed documentaries but rarely gets the scripted, character-driven treatment this series gives it.

Why it stands out on Netflix

Netflix has leaned hard into international originals over the last few years, but a scripted Brazilian legal drama is genuinely new territory for the platform — this is billed as its first. For US viewers who have worked through the obvious courtroom hits, Habeas Corpus offers the format they like with a setting most American procedurals never touch: the Brazilian justice system, where the gap between who can afford a strong defense and who cannot is central to the drama rather than background detail. The wrongful-conviction angle also travels well, because the moral stakes need no local knowledge to land.

Will there be more?

For now, Habeas Corpus is a self-contained eight-episode season, and Netflix has not announced a second run. That is normal this early — the platform typically waits several weeks to weigh viewership before deciding on a renewal. The story is built to resolve within this season, so there is no cliffhanger obligation forcing a follow-up; any continuation would be a bonus rather than a setup left dangling.

Who is in the cast

Marjorie Estiano, known to Brazilian audiences from dramas such as Sob Pressão (released internationally as Under Pressure), stars as Inez. Any Gabrielly — also recognized for her music career and voice-acting work — plays Marina, the student at the center of the show’s biggest secret. They are joined by Vladimir Brichta, Danton Mello, Natália Lage, and Naruna Costa.

Behind the camera, the series was created by Leonardo Moreira and Donna Oliveira, with direction by Luiz Villaça and Flávia Lacerda. It was produced by Café Royal.

Netflix’s official trailer sets up the wrongful-conviction fight at the heart of the series:

Do you need to read subtitles?

Habeas Corpus is a Portuguese-language series, so US viewers have two options. Netflix offers English subtitles for the original Brazilian Portuguese audio, and it also provides an English-dubbed audio track that you can switch on from the language settings during playback. Either way, no separate purchase is required — both are part of the standard Netflix stream.
