On March 13, Netflix adds Highlander: Endgame to its catalog, bringing the fourth feature film in the fantasy franchise to streaming audiences. Released in 2000 and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, this chapter is especially notable for uniting the two key Immortals of the saga on the big screen: Connor MacLeod and Duncan MacLeod.

Why this movie matters for Highlander fans

For years, fans of the original 1986 movie followed Connor MacLeod, played by Christophe Lambert, while TV viewers connected with Duncan MacLeod, portrayed by Adrian Paul in the television series that ran from 1992 to 1998. Highlander: Endgame is the first time these two versions of the MacLeod legacy cross paths in a feature film, making it a key watch for anyone invested in the overall universe.

Rather than serving as a straightforward continuation of the first three movies, this film aligns itself with the continuity of the TV series, which had already taken the saga in a fresh direction. That context shapes how Connor and Duncan’s relationship is portrayed and why their alliance carries so much weight.

The story: from New York to centuries-old grudges

The movie opens in New York, where Connor reconnects with his cousin Duncan, whom he first met on a battlefield in 1625. Their long history as Immortals anchors the emotional core of the film, contrasting their centuries of experience with the escalating violence they now face.

A decade after this reunion, a bombing destroys Connor’s building and kills Rachel Ellenstein. Devastated by the loss, Connor withdraws to the Sanctuary, a sacred refuge where Immortals seek peace and rest away from the endless cycle of combat.

The narrative shifts between eras, spending time in 16th-century Scotland, where Connor clashes with Jacob Kell. Once a friend, Kell becomes his sworn enemy. After becoming an Immortal himself, Kell dedicates the following centuries to hunting Connor, claiming an astonishing tally of more than six hundred Immortals slain. By the year 2000, the threat he poses is so great that Duncan and Connor must fight side by side to confront him.

An international production across Europe and the United States

Highlander: Endgame is produced by Davis-Panzer Productions, Dimension Films and Mandalay Pictures, with an estimated budget of 25 million dollars. Filming ran from October 22, 1999, to March 7, 2000, taking place largely in Romania, in Bucharest and at the Castel Film studios.

Several key sequences were also shot on location, including:

  • In Scotland, at Stalker Castle and in the Argyll and Bute region;
  • In London, at the Natural History Museum and the Millennium Dome;
  • In New York.

The score is composed by Nick Glennie-Smith and Stephen Graziano. The film also features the traditional song “Bonny Portmore,” performed here by Jennifer McNeil, adding a musical layer that echoes the saga’s historical roots.

Critical reception and impact within the franchise

When it hit theaters in 2000, Highlander: Endgame was met with mostly negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds 11% positive ratings based on 54 published reviews. That reception also led to a nomination at the 2000 The Stinkers Bad Movie Awards in the “worst sequel or remake” category.

Commercially, the movie earned 15,843,608 dollars worldwide, including 12,811,858 dollars in North America. In France, it recorded 243,403 admissions. Despite the weak overall performance, the film opened in the American top 10 during its first week, marking the strongest initial launch of the franchise before its box-office numbers declined quickly.

Two cuts of the film are available: a theatrical version running 87 minutes and a producer’s cut running 101 minutes. The longer cut, re-edited by the producers, restores several scenes and adds an epilogue focused on Duncan and Kate.

For viewers who enjoy fantasy worlds and sword duels, this fourth chapter offers a rare on-screen crossover between the two main faces of the series, now accessible on Netflix starting March 13.

Different versions and how to watch

If you decide to stream Highlander: Endgame on Netflix, it’s worth knowing that the movie exists in two distinct edits. The 87-minute theatrical cut is the shorter, more widely known version, while the 101-minute producer’s cut extends the narrative with additional material and a dedicated epilogue centered on Duncan and Kate. Both versions tell the same core story of Connor and Duncan teaming up against Jacob Kell, but the extended cut offers more context for their relationships.

Key cast and characters

The emotional weight of the film rests on its returning leads. Connor MacLeod, the original big-screen Immortal, is played by Christophe Lambert, whose character carries the burden of centuries of battles and losses. Duncan MacLeod, central hero of the TV series, is brought to life by Adrian Paul. Their on-screen partnership gives the movie its main appeal, especially for long-time fans familiar with both branches of the franchise.
