Launching on Netflix on February 12, Million-Follower Detective is a Taiwanese crime thriller that dives straight into the dark side of online fame. Written and directed by Shaun Su, the series uses the world of social media not just as a backdrop, but as a driving force behind its central mystery.

A killer mystery built around crime predictions

At the heart of Million-Follower Detective is a chilling premise: a mysterious woman suddenly explodes in popularity on social platforms after she starts predicting the murders of influencers with unnerving accuracy. Each time she announces a new crime, reality seems to follow her words.

As her forecasts keep lining up with real cases, her follower count skyrockets and she becomes impossible to ignore in the digital ecosystem. The series explores what happens when a person’s online reach grows in direct proportion to the violence they appear to foresee.

Through this setup, Million-Follower Detective questions how we consume and amplify information in an age where:

  • viral content often takes off before anyone checks what is true,
  • horrific crimes can be treated like must-see media events,
  • the chase for visibility can blur basic moral boundaries.

While it remains grounded in the familiar beats of a police thriller, the show relocates those tropes into a world shaped by platform culture and the pressures of living life in public.

A high-profile cast from Taiwan and Hong Kong

The series is led by Hong Kong actor Ekin Cheng, a well-known face for audiences across Asia, who takes on a prominent role in this Taiwanese TV production. Around him, the core ensemble includes Shou Lo, Patty Lee, Wang Po-chieh, Lee Lee-zen and Buffy Chen, forming the main investigative team at the center of the story.

The recurring cast features Chang Yung-cheng, Kao Ying-hsuan, Chou Ming-yu, Kent Tsai and Isaac Yang. The production also brings in several Taiwanese content creators for brief appearances, tightening the connection between the fictional narrative and the real-world influencer landscape it portrays.

Filmed on location in the heart of Taipei

Million-Follower Detective was first announced in 2022 by production companies Bossdom Digiinnovation and Gift Pictures. Filming took place mainly in Taipei, using recognizable locations such as the Red House Theater and the Neihu district to anchor the story in a concrete urban setting.

Production wrapped at the end of spring 2022. The show was later added to Netflix’s slate of original titles scheduled for 2026, underscoring the streamer’s growing appetite for Taiwanese series and for stories rooted in local realities.

For viewers curious about crime stories shaped by social media dynamics, the series will be available to stream on Netflix starting February 12, with an investigation where digital influence is a central narrative tool.
