Spoiler warning: this article reveals and explains the entire ending of The Terminal List Season 2, including the finale, “Fathers and Sons.”
In the Season 2 finale, James Reece learns that the assassination of Russian President Drozdov was never a terrorist attack — it was a coup decades in the making, built by Colonel Ivan Zarkov to destabilize Russia, reignite the war in Ukraine, and push an ultranationalist into power. The deeper truth is personal: the entire plot is revenge aimed at Reece’s own father, who killed Zarkov’s brother back in 1972.
All eight episodes of Season 2 landed on Prime Video at once on October 21, 2026, where the show streams exclusively in the US. This season adapts True Believer, the second novel in Jack Carr’s James Reece series. Here is how it all comes together.
What happens in the finale
The last episode opens with Reece (Chris Pratt) saying goodbye to his friend Freddy Strain, killed in the Odessa attack. Reece hands Freddy’s journal to his widow, Joanie, and promises to track down everyone responsible — and with that, a new list is born. Soon after, the US government grants him a presidential pardon that wipes his record clean and offers him surgery to treat his brain tumor. Vic Rodriguez offers Reece a spot on his team, but Reece chooses to stay free.
Working with Raife Hastings, Reece reconstructs the real conspiracy. President Drozdov’s assassination was not terrorism but a coup designed to throw Russia into chaos, restart the war in Ukraine, and hand power to the ultranationalist Ivan Zarkov — the man known as “the Colonel.”
The Katie Buranek thread
Journalist Katie Buranek discovers an article published under her byline that she never wrote, one that amplifies a fabricated account from oligarch Vasili Adrenov through the Voltstreem outlet. Her reporting ties Adrenov to the conspiracy and to Oliver Grey, who had slipped into the peace summit using credentials from the same network.
An operation launches to capture Adrenov near Kherson before he can reach Russian soil, without directly engaging the Russian military. The helicopter assault descends into chaos. Reece finally pins down Adrenov and demands the name of the sniper who killed Freddy. The answer is chilling: Freddy was never the target. The sniper was aiming at Reece, and the trail leads all the way back to his father, Thomas Reece. When Adrenov refuses to say more, Reece kills him with a hatchet, and Ukrainian air support pulls the team out.
The twist about Reece’s father that changes everything
A month later, at CIA headquarters in Langley, an intelligence officer hands Reece a file on his father’s past. Oliver Grey had repeatedly requested information about Thomas Reece, zeroing in on an operation from the Vietnam War. In 1972, Thomas Reece killed two Russian military advisers, one of them Viktor Zarkov — the Colonel’s brother and Vasili Adrenov’s father.
That reframes the whole season. The conspiracy’s roots run more than fifty years deep: Ivan Zarkov spent decades building his revenge, intent on installing his nephew in power and forcing Thomas Reece’s son to watch the family’s return to glory. Reece also learns that his father never abandoned him. Thomas kept serving the CIA until his own assassination in Buenos Aires in 1997, and his name now sits on the agency’s memorial wall, beside Freddy’s. One last unsettling detail: in an old photograph, Reece spots Grey wearing his father’s watch — a sign Grey knows far more about Thomas’s death than he has ever admitted.
What the finale deliberately leaves open
The season refuses to tie everything off. Oliver Grey, the Colonel, and the sniper who killed Freddy are all still at large; the finale even shows Grey settling comfortably into a new house in St. Petersburg, ready for whatever comes next. Katie Buranek finishes her manuscript about Reece but chooses to give it to him rather than publish it, then returns to the field — not before convincing him to finally get treatment.
The closing image shows Reece beginning that treatment, going in for an MRI ahead of surgery. Whether the tumor can be beaten is left unanswered on screen, a loose thread the show clearly plans to pull later.
Frequently asked
How does The Terminal List Season 2 end?
Reece kills Vasili Adrenov, receives a presidential pardon, and discovers the conspiracy was revenge for Viktor Zarkov, a Russian adviser his father killed in 1972. He walks away a free man, treated just in time, but already locked onto a new hunt for Oliver Grey and the Colonel, both still on the run.
Is James Reece’s brain tumor cured?
The show does not say. Reece finally agrees to treatment and undergoes an MRI before surgery, but the episode ends before any results. His health is left as a deliberate open question.
Who is Oliver Grey?
Grey is the conspiracy’s inside man: he helped enable the assassination and spent years investigating Thomas Reece. The father’s watch he wears in an old photo suggests he is tied to Thomas’s death, which makes him Reece’s personal target going forward.
Will there be a Season 3?
Prime Video has not officially confirmed a third season. That said, the finale leaves plenty of fuel — Grey and the Colonel at large, the mystery around Thomas Reece’s death, and a brand-new list — so a continuation would have a clear runway if the show is renewed.
