Lovesick, the sweeping Mexican period romance also known by its original title Mal de amores, premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, September 2, 2026, streaming worldwide, including in the US. All seven episodes drop at once, at Netflix’s customary release time of 12:00 a.m. PT (3:00 a.m. ET), and they’re included on every Netflix plan at no extra cost.

Where and when to watch Lovesick

Lovesick is a Netflix original, so it streams exclusively on Netflix, with no separate rental or purchase. The full first season, all seven episodes, arrives Tuesday, September 2, 2026. Netflix typically makes new titles available at 12:00 a.m. Pacific, which is 3:00 a.m. Eastern, so East Coast viewers can start early Tuesday morning while West Coast subscribers can begin at midnight.

What it costs

You only need an active Netflix subscription. The series is included at no extra charge on every tier, from the ad-supported Standard with Ads plan up through the ad-free Standard and Premium plans. There is no separate fee to watch Lovesick.

What Lovesick is about

Set during the Mexican Revolution, Lovesick follows Emilia Sauri, a young woman determined to become a doctor at a time when society barely makes room for her ambitions. Emilia faces the hardest dilemma of her life: loving two men without giving up her dream of studying medicine. Daniel Cuenca is a charismatic revolutionary who fed her childhood dreams; Antonio Zavalza is a steady doctor searching for peace in the middle of a war. Between them, she is forced to choose between her heart and her calling. This is no passive heroine: Emilia is a woman ahead of her time, set on a scientific career in a world that keeps telling her no.

The series is a costume drama with real scope, built on period sets, detailed costumes, and the momentum of a genuine saga against the backdrop of early-20th-century uprisings. For US viewers, it’s also a rare window into a chapter of Mexican history that English-language television seldom dramatizes on this scale.

The cast

Renata Vaca, known to Netflix subscribers from Pedal to Metal, stars as Emilia Sauri. She leads a cast that includes Juan Pablo Fuentes (Bandidos) as Daniel Cuenca and Iván Amozurrutia, familiar from Fake Profile and Dark Desire, as Antonio Zavalza. Cassandra Ciangherotti, Diana Bovio, Miguel Rodarte, and veteran Humberto Zurita round out an ensemble rooted in Mexican cinema.

A beloved novel brought to the screen

Lovesick adapts Mal de amores, the award-winning 1996 novel by Mexican writer and journalist Ángeles Mastretta, a major figure in Latin American literature. The adaptation is written, produced, and directed by her own daughter, Catalina Aguilar Mastretta, who turns this intimate, political epic into a period piece, made as much for fans of historical romance as for readers of the original book.
