Collins kills himself before he can name the accomplice, but Pete decodes the clue Carter drops during a prison visit: the new killer imitates the master because he is starved for a father’s love.

The copycat is Francis Carter Jr. (Owen Teague), Frank Carter’s son. Under a false identity, he had worked his way into the family’s orbit by posing as a teaching assistant at Jake’s school. After stabbing Amanda, he abducts Jake, planning to bury the boy where his father once hid a fifth victim.
Pete pries the location out of Carter in exchange for a promise and warns Tom, who reaches the site first and walks into a trap. Pete arrives to help fight Francis off but is fatally stabbed in the struggle. In the end, it’s Jake who saves himself: hiding in the attic, he positions himself beyond a weak stretch of floorboards. Francis charges after him, crashes through the boards, and falls. Tom and Jake survive, and Amanda pulls through despite her wounds, but Pete dies from his injuries.
The film draws a sharp line between father and son. Frank Carter killed out of revenge for his own childhood; Francis kills to be recognized by a father he never knew.
The girl in the blue sweater, explained
From the start, Jake talks about a girl in a blue sweater whom Tom assumes is the imaginary friend of a grieving child. The film takes her seriously: she stays with Jake, including during his captivity, telling him how to hold on and where to hide.
The final scene gives that presence its meaning. Settling into his late father’s house, Tom finds old photographs of Rebecca as a child, wearing the same blue sweater. The girl watching over Jake is his mother, as she was long before he was born.
Frank Carter’s last act
Imprisoned in turn, Francis Jr. never makes it to trial. In a prison room, Frank Carter kills his own son himself, smothering him the way he once smothered his victims. The monstrous father “corrects” the child who wanted to be like him. Amanda, meanwhile, receives a chilling letter from Carter thanking her for what she and Pete did. Evil stays caged, but it gets the last word.
What the film leaves unresolved
The Whisper Man deliberately keeps one question open. Is the blue-sweater girl simply the projection of a boy inventing a maternal presence to survive grief and abduction, or is she a genuine protective spirit, a mother keeping watch beyond death? The movie never settles it, holding the ambiguity all the way to the credits, somewhere between psychological reading and supernatural chill. That deliberate half-light is what gives the ending its emotional charge, more than the thriller mechanics alone.
