Spoiler warning: this article reveals and explains the ending of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 2. If you have not finished all eight episodes, stop here.

The “ghost” haunting Hawkins in Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 Season 2 turns out to be Daniel Fischer, the season’s true villain and the entity known as the Lich. In the finale, the Hawkins investigators destroy his monstrous Golem and stop him from tearing open a new gate to the Upside Down, but the show pointedly does not confirm that Daniel is dead, leaving the door open for what comes next.

All eight episodes of Season 2 have been streaming on Netflix in the US since September 17, 2026. Here is what actually happens in the finale, laid out piece by piece.

What the “ghost” haunting Hawkins really is

For most of the season, the Hawkins Investigators Club is chasing what looks like a supernatural haunting: strange apparitions, iridescent blue flowers spreading through town, and creatures that seem to appear out of nowhere. The finale confirms the truth behind all of it. The “ghost” is Daniel Fischer, a figure tied to the events of Season 1 whose body was left trapped in the Upside Down.

Daniel’s consciousness found a way back into Hawkins by spreading through the plant life grown from his own serum. The roots, pollen, and spores of those glowing flowers are, in effect, his nervous system in the real world. The apparitions the kids kept seeing were Daniel projecting himself through that vegetation, all of it building toward a single towering creature: the Golem.

The Lich’s plan: turning fear into a gate

The central twist is that the “Lich” pulling the strings from the shadows was never a new monster from the Upside Down. It was Daniel himself, transformed and cut off from his human body. And his goal was specific. Daniel was turning fear into energy, using the terror he spread across Hawkins as fuel.

Dustin is the one who pieces it together: Daniel needs that harvested fear to power a new gate between Hawkins and the Upside Down. The hauntings were not random cruelty. They were a way to farm the town, scaring people to build up enough energy to force the doorway open. Once the club understands that fear is the fuel, they stop fighting the symptoms and go after the supply.

How the kids beat the Golem

Rather than take the Golem head-on, the club splits up to cut off everything keeping Daniel alive in Hawkins. Eleven holds off the Golem directly, buying the others time. Max and Lucas race around town burning the iridescent flowers that feed him, choking off his power source flower by flower. Meanwhile, Dustin, Will, and Nikki, with help from Charlie Dandridge, lure the smaller creatures into the mines and detonate the natural gas trapped underground, wiping them out in one blast.

With his flowers burning and his creatures gone, Daniel loses the energy grid holding everything together. The Golem is neutralized, and the new gate never opens.

What happens to Mike Wheeler

The finale puts Mike Wheeler in real danger during the fight, to the point where it looks like he might not make it back. Eleven refuses to let him go. She pulls him back from the edge, and Mike survives the season, one of several beats that ties this 1985-set animated story back to the characters fans know from the flagship series.

What happens to Daniel Fischer

Here is where the finale gets deliberately slippery. Once the flowers are ash and the Golem is down, Daniel’s presence in Hawkins collapses. His substitute body, the one built out of plant matter, dissolves. But that is not the same as killing him.

Daniel’s original body is still stranded in the Upside Down, exactly where it has been since Season 1. The season strips him of his foothold in Hawkins without ever confirming that he is gone for good. In other words, the club wins the battle for the town, but the threat that started it all is not definitively dead. That distinction matters for where the series can go next.

How Season 2 sets up Season 3

By leaving Daniel’s true body intact in the Upside Down, the finale keeps its main antagonist in play and teases that Hawkins is not finished with him or with whatever else the season stirred up. As of now, Netflix has not officially renewed Tales from ’85 for a third season. That silence is not necessarily a bad sign: Netflix renewed the show for Season 2 just days after Season 1 launched, so a decision could come quickly once the streamer sees how Season 2 performs.

The show also has plenty of room to keep going. Its 1985 setting lets it explore the years before the original Stranger Things without contradicting it, and the unresolved threat left at the end of Season 2 is a natural launch point for another chapter.

Here is the official Season 2 trailer from Netflix:

Frequently asked

Who is the villain in Tales from ’85 Season 2?

Daniel Fischer, revealed as the entity called the Lich. He haunts Hawkins by spreading his consciousness through plant life grown from his serum.

Does Mike Wheeler die?

No. Mike is nearly lost during the finale, but Eleven pulls him back and he survives the season.

Is Daniel Fischer dead at the end of Season 2?

Not confirmed. His plant-based body in Hawkins is destroyed, but his original body remains trapped in the Upside Down, so the finale stops short of killing him off.

Has Tales from ’85 been renewed for Season 3?

Not yet. Netflix has made no official Season 3 announcement, though it renewed the series for Season 2 very quickly after Season 1.

Where can I watch Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 in the US?

All episodes stream on Netflix, included with every subscription tier.
