Status: Renewed. Blue Eye Samurai is coming back — Season 2 premieres on Netflix in January 2027, and the series has been renewed for a third and final season set for 2028.

Yes, Blue Eye Samurai will return for Season 3, and Netflix has confirmed it will be the show’s last. The streamer settled the animated epic’s future at Anime NYC 2026, locking in a January 2027 launch for the long-awaited second season and announcing that a third season, already in production, will close out Mizu’s revenge saga in 2028.

Is Blue Eye Samurai renewed or canceled?

It is renewed — and given a clear finish line. After a wait of more than three years since the first season, Netflix has ordered both the previously delayed Season 2 and a Season 3 that will serve as the series finale. Fans who worried the acclaimed series had quietly stalled now have the opposite news: a two-season runway with a defined ending rather than an open-ended limbo.

When does Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 premiere?

Season 2 arrives on Netflix in January 2027. Netflix has confirmed the launch window but has not yet pinned down an exact day. Alongside the date, the streamer released a first teaser that picks up Mizu mid-journey: she is at sea, sailing toward London with her captured enemy Abijah Fowler in tow, before a final shot leaves her fate hanging.

Season 3 is expected in 2028. Netflix says it is already in production, which should spare viewers another multi-year gap between chapters after the long stretch that followed Season 1.

Why Season 3 will be the last

The three-season plan is a deliberate narrowing. Creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green originally envisioned telling Mizu’s story across four seasons plus a movie, with a potential spin-off centered on the character Ringo. Netflix has since compressed that roadmap into three seasons total, which means Season 3 has to carry the full weight of the ending the creators were building toward.

That tighter structure is not necessarily a downgrade. A fixed, three-part arc gives the writers a firm target to build to, and it removes the risk of a story that sprawls or gets cut off mid-swing — a fate that has ended plenty of ambitious animated series before their creators could land them.

The Blue Eye Samurai release timeline

  • Season 1 — premiered November 2023, eight episodes, all streaming now on Netflix.
  • Season 2 — premieres January 2027 on Netflix; exact day to be confirmed.
  • Season 3 — expected in 2028, confirmed as the final season and already in production.

The gap between the first two seasons is unusually long for a marquee Netflix title, and part of the reason is the labor-intensive animation: the series is produced with a painterly, detailed style that takes time to render at feature quality. Netflix’s decision to green-light Season 3 before Season 2 has even aired suggests confidence that the audience will still be there when Mizu returns.

What to remember about Blue Eye Samurai before Season 2

Blue Eye Samurai premiered in November 2023 with an eight-episode first season and drew near-universal critical acclaim, along with Emmy nominations. Created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, it is an adult animated action series set in Edo-period Japan, during a time when the country’s borders were sealed to outsiders.

Maya Erskine voices Mizu, a mixed-race swordsmith — half-white, half-Japanese — who hides her identity behind a stoic mask and hunts the four white men who were in Japan when she was born, one of whom is her father. Kenneth Branagh voices Abijah Fowler, the ruthless arms dealer at the center of that hunt and the prisoner seen beside Mizu in the Season 2 teaser. The series pairs painterly animation with brutal, precisely staged sword fights, which is a large part of why it broke through the way it did. Beyond the action, its story of an outsider refusing the identity a rigid society tries to force on her gave the show a thematic weight that pushed it past a niche audience and into awards conversations.

Where to watch Blue Eye Samurai in the US

Season 1 of Blue Eye Samurai is streaming now on Netflix in the United States, which is the place to catch up before Season 2 lands in January 2027. All eight first-season episodes are available to stream, and both new seasons will premiere on Netflix as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blue Eye Samurai getting a Season 2? Yes. Season 2 premieres on Netflix in January 2027.

How many seasons will Blue Eye Samurai have? Three. Season 3, expected in 2028, has been confirmed as the final season.

Is Blue Eye Samurai canceled? No. It is renewed through a planned series finale, not canceled. Netflix simply shortened the story from an earlier four-season concept to three seasons.

Do I need to rewatch Season 1 first? It helps. Season 1 sets up Mizu’s revenge targets and her rivalry with Abijah Fowler, both of which the Season 2 teaser picks back up.
