On January 15, Paramount+ quietly dropped a new science-fiction thriller, The Fix, a feature written and directed by Kelsey Egan. Originally released in 2024 on the festival circuit and later available on video on demand, the film imagines a future where simply staying alive depends on a single, tightly controlled drug.

A world where breathing the air becomes a privilege

The story unfolds in a near future where Earth’s atmosphere has become so toxic that humans can’t endure long exposure without protection. In this collapsing ecosystem, one corporation sets the rules: Aethera. The company holds an exclusive monopoly over a treatment called AIRemedy, marketed as the only reliable shield against the omnipresent pollution.

This dependence is no accident. Behind its polished public image, Aethera is sitting on a supply problem that the population doesn’t know about: there simply isn’t enough AIRemedy to meet global demand. That scarcity, far from being solved, is weaponized. By deciding who gets access to the medication, the company effectively governs who can move, work, and survive, while an underground resistance slowly takes shape to fight this system.

The unexpected mutation that changes everything

At the center of the film is Ella McPhee, a famous model and public figure closely associated with Aethera’s image. She is still haunted by her mother’s suicide when a seemingly accidental event flips her life upside down: she ingests an experimental substance.

From that moment, Ella’s body begins to change in ways no one predicted. She develops unprecedented mutations that grant her abnormal physical abilities. These transformations make her unique in the world of the film: she becomes the only person capable of surviving with a synthetic alternative to Aethera’s AIRemedy.

This discovery instantly turns her into a critical asset. The company’s scientific leadership zeroes in on her, seeing in her altered biology both a threat and an opportunity. Hunted by corporate security forces and coveted for what her body can endure, Ella is thrust into the middle of a brutal confrontation between industrial interests and a growing underground resistance.

When sci-fi meets political thriller on Paramount+

The Fix blends science-fiction with the tension of a political thriller. Written and directed by Kelsey Egan, who also serves as producer, the film is carried by a cast that includes Grace Van Dien, Daniel Sharman, Keenan Arrison and Nicole Fortuin. Production started in 2021, after several years of development and refinancing.

Before landing on streaming, the movie made its way through festival screenings, including university test showings and a closing slot at the Chattanooga Film Festival in 2024. Through its narrative, it raises pointed questions about what happens when health becomes a commodity, how far surveillance can go in a hyper-controlled society, and what individual choice really means when a corporate power structure dominates every aspect of life.

Now streaming on Paramount+, The Fix targets viewers who enjoy dystopian stories where science is not simply a tool for progress, but also a mechanism of control and domination — sometimes the only path to survival, and at the same time the most efficient way to keep populations in check.
