Plastic Beauty premieres on Netflix in the United States on Wednesday, September 17, 2026, and like every Netflix original it drops all at once — at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time (3:00 a.m. Eastern Time), with no separate rental or add-on. If you have any Netflix plan, from the $8.99-a-month ad-supported tier up to the ad-free Standard ($19.99) and Premium ($26.99) plans, this Japanese drama is included at no extra cost.

Here is where, when, and why to watch one of the fall’s most talked-about Japanese titles — a show that has flown almost entirely under the radar of English-language coverage.

What is Plastic Beauty about?

The short answer: it is a two-doctor drama that uses the cosmetic surgery clinic as a stage for a fight over what medicine is actually for. At the center is Fumi Numata (Mayu Matsuoka), a gifted reconstructive surgeon who is pushed out of her hospital after an emergency operation and lands, reluctantly, in the world of elective cosmetic work. There she collides with Rin Tohyama (Riisa Naka), a celebrity surgeon and media fixture who genuinely believes that making people beautiful is its own kind of healing.

That clash — save the body versus reshape it — is the engine of the series. The original Japanese title, Downtime (the recovery window when swelling and bruising fade after a procedure), doubles as the show’s guiding metaphor: the uncomfortable in-between stretch a person passes through on the way to becoming who they want to be. Around that idea, the series digs into the social and financial pressure driving Japan’s booming beauty industry, and how far people will go — physically and financially — to meet a standard someone else set for them.

Who is in the cast?

The draw here is a lead pairing that U.S. streamers may already know without realizing it:

  • Mayu Matsuoka as Fumi Numata — Matsuoka starred in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was an Oscar nominee for Best International Feature
  • Riisa Naka as Rin Tohyama — Naka broke through with international audiences in Netflix’s own Alice in Borderland
  • Shotaro Mamiya as Rui Komiya
  • Minami Tanaka as Nanami Todoroki
  • Hiromi Nagasaku as Taeko Numata

The series is directed by Yuki Saito, whose medical drama Unmet: A Neurosurgeon’s Diary earned strong notices, and written by Junya Ikegami. It was produced in Japan for Netflix by K2 Pictures.

Watch the trailer

Netflix’s official trailer sets the register — clinical, glossy, and quietly unsettling — as the two surgeons and their patients circle the question of what a “fixed” face is really worth.

Why this one is worth your time

Japanese live-action drama is one of the most consistently under-covered corners of U.S. streaming, and Plastic Beauty is a clean example of why that is a missed opportunity. The premise is topical — cosmetic procedures and the culture around them are a live debate in the States too — and the show approaches it as a character drama rather than a lecture, with two well-matched leads arguing opposite sides of a genuinely thorny question. If you came to Japanese Netflix through a thriller like Alice in Borderland, seeing Riisa Naka pivot into a sharp, adult drama is reason enough to press play.

It also fits a particular viewing mood. Because Netflix releases the full eight-episode run at once, this is a weekend title you can move through at your own pace — a grounded, talky drama that rewards attention rather than one built for background noise. Go in expecting a workplace character study with a moral edge, not a soapy medical procedural, and it lands.

Frequently asked

What time does Plastic Beauty come out on Netflix?
Netflix releases new originals at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Every episode is available the moment it goes live on September 17, 2026.

Is Plastic Beauty in English or Japanese?
It is a Japanese-language production. On Netflix in the U.S. you can watch with English subtitles or switch to the English-dubbed audio track in the player settings.

How many episodes are there?
The season runs eight episodes, all released together on premiere day.

Is it the same show as the J-drama Downtime?
Yes. Downtime is the original Japanese title; Plastic Beauty is the name Netflix uses for the series internationally, including in the U.S.

Do I need a special plan to watch it?
No. Plastic Beauty is included with every U.S. Netflix plan, from the $8.99-a-month ad-supported tier up to the ad-free Standard ($19.99) and Premium ($26.99) options. There is nothing extra to rent or buy.
